Isola Naida is equipped with a Raymarine Axiom 9 multifunction display (MFD), which serves as the vessel’s primary chartplotter and electronic navigation display. The Axiom 9 provides GPS/GNSS positioning and displays electronic nautical charts using the Navionics chart system.
The Axiom 9 is part of Raymarine’s Axiom series of touchscreen multifunction displays and runs the LightHouse operating system. The unit can also be integrated with other marine electronics and sensors through Raymarine networking, NMEA 2000, and wireless connectivity.
Raymarine specifies the Axiom 9 as having a built-in GNSS receiver capable of receiving GPS, GLONASS, and BeiDou satellite systems. The receiver uses the WGS-84 geodetic datum by default, although alternative datums can be selected through the MFD.

Navigation Charts
Isola Naida uses Navionics electronic nautical charts with the Axiom 9.
Raymarine officially supports Navionics charts on Axiom-series displays. Compatible Navionics chart products include Navionics+ and Navionics Platinum+. Depending on the chart subscription and chart region, Navionics provides detailed marine charting information and additional features such as SonarChart and other enhanced chart data.
The chart data is stored on a compatible microSD card installed in the Axiom 9. The chart card should remain installed while the chartplotter is being used for navigation.
Primary Functions
The Axiom 9 is used aboard Isola Naida for:
- Displaying the vessel’s current GPS position
- Viewing electronic nautical charts
- Monitoring course and speed over ground
- Planning and following routes
- Creating and navigating to waypoints
- Monitoring the vessel’s track
- Determining distance and bearing to charted locations
- Viewing navigational aids and charted hazards
- Providing navigation information to other compatible onboard equipment
The Axiom 9 can also serve as a central display for compatible Raymarine equipment and networked marine electronics.
Chart Display
The Chart application is the primary navigation application on the Axiom 9. The display can be configured to show different levels of chart detail and navigation information according to the operator’s requirements.
The chart display should be configured so that important navigational information, including aids to navigation, hazards, depth information, and other relevant charted features, remains visible.
Electronic chart information should always be used together with appropriate official nautical publications and other available navigational information. The chartplotter is a navigation aid and should not be treated as a substitute for maintaining a proper navigational watch.
GPS Position
The Axiom 9 contains an internal GNSS antenna and receiver, allowing it to determine the vessel’s position without requiring a separate external GPS receiver. Raymarine specifies a nominal position accuracy of up to 15 metres without SBAS and up to 5 metres with SBAS, under the conditions specified by the manufacturer.
The GPS position displayed by the Axiom should be checked for plausibility against the vessel’s actual position and other available navigation information.
Routes and Waypoints
Routes and waypoints can be created directly on the Axiom 9. These can be used to plan passages, identify locations of interest, and provide navigation guidance while underway.
Particular attention should be paid to chart scale, water depth, hazards, and the accuracy of charted information when creating a route. A route displayed on the chartplotter should always be reviewed by the navigator before it is followed.
Tracks
The Axiom 9 can record the vessel’s track while underway. Tracks provide a record of the vessel’s actual course and position over time and can be useful for reviewing previous passages, documenting anchorages, or retracing a route.
Track data should be periodically reviewed and backed up if it is considered important.
Connectivity
The Axiom 9 provides several methods of connecting to other equipment. The unit supports NMEA 2000, Raymarine RayNet Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.
These interfaces allow the Axiom 9 to form part of a larger marine electronics network. The exact equipment connected to Isola Naida’s Axiom 9 should be documented separately in the relevant equipment and network articles.
Power
The Axiom 9 operates from the vessel’s nominal 12 V DC electrical system. Raymarine specifies an operating voltage range of 8–16 V DC and a 7 A fuse rating for the original Axiom series.
The chartplotter should be powered through the appropriate vessel electrical circuit rather than being connected directly to an unprotected battery supply.
Maintenance
The Axiom 9 has no routine mechanical maintenance requirements. Periodic maintenance should include:
- Cleaning the touchscreen with an appropriate soft, lint-free cloth
- Inspecting power and network connections
- Inspecting the MicroSD card and chart card for damage
- Checking for corrosion or moisture around connectors
- Keeping the display and surrounding area clean and unobstructed
- Keeping the chart data and Axiom software up to date
Software and chart updates should be performed according to the current Raymarine and Navionics procedures.
